A shagbark hickory sits alone in the middle of a square mile field. This fine example of a solitary tree can be found of the farm of Carol and Fern Walters. When the owners were asked why this tree survived, the reply was simple-it serves as a landmark. The corn rows can be seen arcing around this sentinel of the landscape.
