An easy, 1-mile hike along the old Monon Trail, part of the Delphi trail system, will bring you to High Bridge. The abandoned rail bridge crosses over Deer Creek, that James Whitcomb Riley wrote about in his poem “On the banks o' Deer Crick.”
A story from a Delphi historian pointed out how, back in the 1920’s, this Dear Creek Valley was proposed to be a state park. However, when the Great Depression hit, that idea fell through. So, when you walk out to the middle of the span, if you can handle heights, you’ll have a fine view of this beautiful valley along with Whistler Woods , an adjacent NICHES Land Trust preserve.
